Russian Ballistic Strike and Blackouts Leave Kyiv and Chernihiv Facing Severe Power Strain
Kyiv’s mayor reports a Russian ballistic strike that injured five people and damaged a key bridge and energy facilities in Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions, while Chernihiv’s city council says the city is completely without power and electric transport has stopped.
A fresh Russian strike and cascading grid problems have left major Ukrainian cities warning of critical pressure on electricity and basic services.
Kyiv’s mayor said that Russia carried out a ballistic strike overnight, injuring five people in the capital. According to his account, Russian forces hit infrastructure facilities, damaging the Pivnichnyi (Northern) Bridge and energy sites in both Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions. He described the result as an extremely difficult situation for electricity, heat and water supply in the capital.
The strike also damaged residential buildings. Debris damaged a five‑story building in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district, and windows were blown out in another five‑story building.
Farther north, the Chernihiv city council announced that Chernihiv was completely without power. The outage forced a halt to electric transport in the city. The council’s statement did not link the blackout to a specific missile or drone attack but confirmed the scale of the disruption.
These events fit into Russia’s recurring pattern of hitting Ukrainian infrastructure, including bridges and energy sites that support daily life and military logistics. Damage to the Pivnichnyi Bridge affects a key crossing, while hits on power facilities in Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions and the blackout in Chernihiv put added stress on Ukraine’s already strained grid.
The pace of repairs in Kyiv and Chernihiv, the ability to restore stable electricity, and any follow‑on Russian strikes on infrastructure will determine whether these cities can stabilize power, heating and water supplies or face longer‑lasting outages as the conflict continues.
