Four industry sources quoted by Reuters said the attack damaged the AVT-3 crude distillation unit. That unit accounts for about 40% of the refinery’s capacity, making the outage a substantial blow to the plant’s operations.
The disruption comes on top of earlier damage: another key unit at the same refinery was already under repair following a strike in August, according to the same sources. With two important units now offline or under repair, the refinery’s ability to run at normal rates has been sharply reduced.
Russian authorities haven’t publicly detailed the scale of the damage or how long repairs might take. Ukraine has repeatedly used drones to hit Russian energy infrastructure, and the Yaroslavl strike fits that pattern of pushing the war deeper into Russia’s industrial and economic sites.
The main questions from here are how quickly Russia can restore the AVT-3 unit, whether production can be shifted to other refineries, and whether Ukraine continues to target major energy facilities that sit far from the front line.
