Four industry sources told Reuters the refinery halted crude runs after the strike damaged its AVT-3 unit, which accounts for about 40% of the plant’s capacity. Another key unit at the site was already under repair after an earlier strike in August, so operators had little room to shift production.
The refinery, located northeast of Moscow, supplies gasoline and diesel to domestic markets. When crude processing stops, Russia has to lean on fuel stocks or reroute supplies from other plants to keep local markets stable.
For Ukraine, this is part of a wider use of drones to hit Russian refineries and other energy targets deep inside Russian territory. Repeated strikes on the same facility show that once a site is proven vulnerable, it can remain on the target list.
What matters next is how long the AVT-3 unit and the refinery as a whole stay offline, and whether similar attacks follow against other Russian refineries, which would signal a sustained campaign against Russia’s fuel infrastructure.
