Kremlin Says Putin–Zelensky Meeting at U.S. G20 Summit Is Impossible
The Kremlin says a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the upcoming G20 summit in the United States is impossible, closing off one potential venue for any direct top‑level contact between the two wartime leaders.
Hopes that the G20 summit in the United States might bring Russia’s and Ukraine’s leaders into the same room have been shut down in Moscow.
The Kremlin has stated that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the gathering is impossible. A separate Kremlin remark repeated the point, ruling out any such encounter at the summit.
That removes one of the few occasions where both leaders were expected in the same host country alongside a broad group of major powers. It means the war will be discussed at the summit without any direct interaction between the two men at its center.
The refusal comes as Russia continues its military campaign in Ukraine, including reported strikes on targets in the Odesa region such as residential buildings and a Nova Poshta terminal. Ukrainian President Zelensky, for his part, has sharply criticized European Union voices considering easing sanctions on some Russian oligarchs, describing such moves as immoral and self‑defeating.
By ruling out a meeting at the G20, the Kremlin is signaling that it doesn’t see a U.S.‑hosted summit as a venue for even symbolic top‑level talks. Any future contact would have to come through other channels and under conditions Moscow finds acceptable.
For other G20 members, the decision underlines the limits of what international gatherings can do while the war continues. They can coordinate policy and aid, but they can’t compel the two leaders to engage directly.
Observers will now look instead at whether third parties pursue lower‑level contacts between Moscow and Kyiv around the summit, and whether practical arrangements such as prisoner exchanges or talks on grain exports or nuclear safety continue despite the absence of any presidential meeting.
