Ukraine Targets Russian‑Held Power and Gas Sites Across Occupied Regions in Large Drone Strike

Operational reporting from the early hours of 29 August says Ukraine carried out a large‑scale mid‑range drone attack on energy and gas infrastructure in Russian‑held areas of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, as well as Crimea. Confirmed targets include the Luhansk Thermal Power Plant, one 220‑kilovolt electrical substation, two 150 kV electrical substations, twelve 110 kV substations and five gas distribution stations.
The range and type of facilities listed suggest an effort to disrupt the backbone of the occupation‑era power network rather than hit a single high‑profile site. High‑voltage substations at 220 kV and 150 kV are major nodes that move electricity across regions, while 110 kV substations tie that power into city and industrial grids. Gas distribution stations regulate flows from larger pipelines into local systems.
For people living under Russian control in these areas, damage to such infrastructure risks power cuts, heating problems and disruptions to services that depend on electricity, such as water pumping. Even if equipment is only partly damaged, operators may be forced to reroute power, which can cause rolling blackouts and strain remaining lines.
The same sites also matter for Russia’s war effort. Power plants and substations support rail lines, depots and command facilities that Russia has established in occupied territories to keep its logistics closer to the front. Gas distribution stations feed industry and, in some cases, local power generation. Strikes across multiple regions in one night increase the pressure on this rear‑area support network.
The attack fits into a wider pattern of both sides targeting each other’s energy systems to weaken military capabilities and increase costs for civilians. In this case, the listed targets are all in areas under Russian control, including territories Moscow claims to have annexed, rather than inside Russia’s internationally recognised borders.
The effectiveness of the strike will depend on how quickly Russia can repair or replace damaged equipment, and whether it shifts air defences or other assets to protect similar sites.
