Ukraine Targets Russia’s Gas Arteries and Grid in New Strike on Kursk Facility
Ukrainian forces say they hit a Gazprom Transgaz Moscow facility on Russia’s main gas transmission network in Kursk region, as local media report a major fire near the “Kursk” substation in Medvensky district. The attack shows Ukraine is willing to pressure Russia’s energy backbone far from the front, putting pipeline operators, grid managers, and regional authorities under new strain.
Ukraine is extending its war into the arteries of Russia’s energy system, targeting not just refineries and depots but also the infrastructure that moves gas and power across the country. On 23 August, Ukrainian defense forces said they struck a facility belonging to Russia’s main gas pipeline network near Kursk, in an attack that also triggered a large fire at what local media identified as the “Kursk” substation in the Medvensky district.
Ukrainian officials described the target as the Kursk Linear Product and Metering Station of Gazprom Transgaz Moscow, a node in the company’s main gas transmission system. While initial reports did not specify the level of damage to equipment or whether gas flows were interrupted, footage from the area showed a significant blaze and dark smoke rising from the site. Russian authorities acknowledged a fire in the region but had not publicly detailed the cause or scale of the incident.
For engineers and workers on the ground, such strikes turn routine maintenance and monitoring tasks into front-line work. Linear metering stations and substations are normally quiet, technical installations focused on pressure, volume, and voltage. Now their crews must consider blast risk and the possibility that any unusual noise in the sky is a hostile drone, not a stray aircraft.
From Ukraine’s point of view, attacks on gas and power infrastructure inside Russia are a form of asymmetric pressure. Kyiv cannot match Moscow’s missile stockpiles or air force, but it can send unmanned systems against critical nodes that support Russian industry, civilian life, and, indirectly, the war effort. Hitting a Gazprom-operated facility in Kursk — a region already used as a staging and supply area for Russian forces — signals that no part of the support network is off limits.
Strategically, the strike dovetails with a broader campaign against Russian energy assets, including earlier drone attacks on refinery units such as the AVT-9 crude distillation installation at the Novokuybyshevsk refinery. Those operations aim to reduce Russia’s ability to refine crude into fuels, raise domestic costs, and force Moscow to spend time and money on repairs rather than new weapons or troop rotations.
The choice of Kursk matters. The region sits close to the Ukrainian border and hosts military logistics and depots, but it is also integrated into Russia’s internal gas grid. A successful attack on a linear station there does not threaten export contracts directly in the way a strike on a major export terminal might, but it complicates internal balancing of flows and heightens the sense among Russian citizens that the war is moving closer to their daily lives.
The broader pattern is that Ukraine is using relatively small numbers of drones and stand-off weapons to impose strategic dilemmas on Moscow: protect airbases, protect refineries, protect radar sites, or protect pipelines and substations, but not all with equal density. As each new category of infrastructure comes under threat, Russia must either reallocate scarce modern air-defense systems or accept higher risk to assets that underpin its economy.
A useful way to see this is that energy infrastructure has become a kind of second battlefield: one where success is not measured only in destroyed equipment, but also in diverted budgets, delayed projects, and rising insurance and security costs. Every hit forces someone in Moscow to choose between fixing, hardening, or relocating critical systems.
The next developments to watch include satellite and commercial data on gas flows through western Russia, Russian government statements on repairs or temporary rerouting, and any reported changes in security measures at similar metering stations and substations. If attacks on the gas transmission system become more frequent, the risk grows that a regional incident could spill into broader disruptions, including in cross-border supplies that still tie Russia to parts of Europe and neighboring states.
