Ukraine’s Deep Drone Strikes Hit Russian Jets, Radars and Spaceport ‘Strategic Facilities’
Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces claim a sweeping set of strikes against Russian military aviation, air defenses and infrastructure from Krasnodar to occupied Crimea, while separate reports point to drones heading toward the Plesetsk cosmodrome in Arkhangelsk region. The attacks, if confirmed, would put fighter jets, radar networks, and even space launch assets in the blast radius of Kyiv’s long-range drone campaign.
Ukraine is trying to redraw the map of what counts as a safe rear area for Russia, using long-range drones to reach airbases, radar sites, gas infrastructure and even the vicinity of a key military spaceport. On 23 August, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces said they had struck a broad slate of Russian aviation and air-defense targets scattered across Krasnodar Krai, Rostov region and occupied Crimea.
According to the Ukrainian military, the targets included a Su-33 and a MiG-29 fighter jet and an Orion combat drone at an airfield in the Vityazevo area near Anapa on Russia’s Black Sea coast. The statement also listed Tor and Pantsir-S1 air-defense systems, an S-400 position near Gelendzhik, and eight radar systems — Nebo-U, Kasta-2E2, Podlet, 36D6M and ST-68 variants — as being hit in the same broad operation. Kyiv did not release imagery of all the impacts, and Russian authorities have not confirmed the damage.
Separately, Ukrainian officials and local Russian sources described attempted or actual drone activity far deeper inside Russia. Preliminary reports said drones were observed over the Pinezhye area of Arkhangelsk region, with at least one local official cited as saying they appeared to be heading toward “strategic facilities.” Other reports went further, suggesting the Plesetsk cosmodrome — Russia’s main northern military spaceport — had been attacked, although details on impact or damage remained unclear.
Closer to the Ukrainian border, Kyiv said its forces hit a facility belonging to Russia’s main gas pipeline system in the Medvensky district of Kursk region, identifying it as a Gazprom Transgaz Moscow linear product and metering station. Unofficial footage from the area showed a large fire and smoke plume near what observers described as the Kursk substation, though the extent of lasting damage to gas flows or power infrastructure was not immediately known.
For Russian military personnel, these strikes and attempted strikes mean longer hours on air-defense duty and the loss, or potential loss, of expensive and scarce assets. A single Su-33 or MiG-29 represents years of training and millions of dollars’ worth of equipment. Radar systems like Nebo-U and Podlet form critical nodes in Russia’s ability to track incoming threats over wide areas; their destruction or disruption can leave gaps that Ukraine may try to exploit with follow-on attacks.
For Ukrainian planners, the campaign is about more than immediate destruction. By forcing Russia to deploy air defenses and harden sites across a vast territory, Kyiv aims to stretch Russian resources, complicate logistics, and raise the cost of basing aircraft and missile systems near the Black Sea or close to Ukraine’s borders. The reported reach toward Plesetsk — a spaceport used for launching military satellites and communications payloads — sends a message that strategic infrastructure once considered untouchable may now be within range of relatively cheap unmanned systems.
The impact extends into energy and industrial security. Strikes on gas transmission nodes and refinery units, such as the earlier hit on the AVT-9 crude distillation unit at the Novokuybyshevsk refinery, are designed to sap Russia’s ability to process and export fuels, to disrupt internal supply chains, and to force Moscow to divert repair crews and spare parts away from other priorities.
The broader pattern is that drones are turning Russia’s depth into a liability: the more infrastructure, bases, radars and launch sites it has, the more targets Ukraine can add to its list. Distance is no longer a guarantee of safety if even a handful of unmanned aircraft can travel hundreds of kilometers and find vulnerable points.
The key insight is simple enough to share: strategic rear areas are only rear areas until technology makes them front lines. Ukraine is betting that by making Russia defend everything, everywhere, it can erode the Kremlin’s capacity to project power over time.
The next indicators to watch will be Russian satellite imagery and local reports confirming or denying damage at Vityazevo and the claimed radar and S-400 sites, any official statement from Moscow on disruptions at Plesetsk, and signs of reduced flight operations or missile activity from the affected regions. Insurance pricing on Russian energy exports and fresh changes to domestic air-defense deployments will offer further clues as to how seriously the Kremlin views this phase of the drone war.
