U.S. Army’s Hunt for Cheaper Anti-Drone Missile Signals How Small Drones Are Reshaping Air Defense

The U.S. Army is seeking a new surface-to-air missile to shoot down small drones at longer ranges for under $150,000 a shot, aiming to replace or augment its current Coyote system and sidestep the limits of laser weapons. The push shows how inexpensive unmanned aircraft are forcing some of the world’s most advanced militaries to rethink the economics and architecture of air defense.

The goal is explicit: a missile that can integrate with existing defenses, outperform the current Coyote counter-drone system, and come in under roughly $150,000 per round.

The requirement, recently outlined in defense industry channels, underscores how the Pentagon has been forced to adapt to a battlefield where adversaries can field swarms of small, low-cost drones that are hard to detect and even harder to defeat without spending far more on the interceptor than the attacker spent on the threat. Current solutions, such as the Coyote, have proven useful but are seen as too limited in range and too expensive for the scale of drone use seen in conflicts from Ukraine to the Middle East.

The Army wants the new missile to plug into its existing air-defense architecture, allowing it to be cued by current radars and command systems rather than requiring an entirely new network. By setting a firm price target, it is also sending a signal to industry: exquisite performance is not enough if every intercept drains budgets at a rate that cannot be sustained in a prolonged conflict.

For soldiers in the field, the need is immediate and practical. Small drones are being used to spot artillery, drop munitions on trenches and vehicles, and strike logistics hubs. Unit commanders have learned that a single quadcopter can pin down a platoon, and a cluster of them can overwhelm traditional point defenses. When the only reliable way to shoot down a $5,000 drone is with a missile costing several hundred thousand dollars, the math favors the attacker.

Strategically, the Army’s search for a cheaper anti-drone missile is part of a broader scramble across NATO and other militaries to close the cost gap between drones and defenses. Laser systems and high-powered microwaves promise ultra-low cost per shot but face weather and range limitations; guns with smart ammunition help at closer distances but struggle to cover larger areas. A relatively inexpensive missile that can reach out farther in all conditions would fill a critical gap between these systems and high-end interceptors meant for cruise and ballistic missiles.

The effort also reflects lessons drawn from allies under fire. Ukraine’s experience has shown that even a well-supplied military can burn through air-defense munitions at alarming rates when confronted with daily barrages of drones and missiles. U.S. planners are watching closely, aware that any future confrontation with a peer adversary will likely feature similar saturation tactics designed to force the U.S. to either exhaust its interceptors or accept more damage.

The sharable insight is stark: in modern air defense, it is no longer enough to hit the target—you have to do it at a price and in quantities that can outlast an enemy willing to expend cheap drones by the hundreds.
