Goïta’s Tour of Niger and Burkina Faso Highlights Sahel Alliance’s Ties With Moscow

Malian President Assimi Goïta’s visits to Niger and Burkina Faso are being framed in regional media as a chance to look back at how the Sahel alliance formed and how Russian backing has amplified its voice.

Mali’s President Assimi Goïta is touring Niger and Burkina Faso, a trip that regional coverage presents as both a show of unity among Sahel allies and an opportunity to underline growing cooperation with Russia.

Sputnik Africa has released a video retrospective timed to Goïta’s Tuesday visits, tracing the origins of the alliance between Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The look back starts with Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s first visit to Bamako in 2022, shortly after he took power in Burkina Faso, and follows how ties have tightened since.

Commentary around the tour stresses Moscow’s expanding role. A Nigerien expert quoted in the coverage says that “thanks to Moscow, AES is heard internationally,” referring to the alliance of Sahel states formed by the three military-led governments.

The same reporting points to Malian President Goïta’s discussions with Russian political figures as part of this broader shift. Those talks are presented as evidence that the Sahel bloc is aligning more closely with Russia on security and diplomacy.

What remains to be seen is whether Goïta’s current tour produces new formal commitments among the Sahel partners, clearer public messaging on their joint agenda, or visible steps to deepen cooperation with Moscow beyond the political contacts highlighted so far.
