Al‑Qaeda‑Linked Ansaru Releases Training Video From Nigeria, Displaying Assault Rifles and Machine Guns
The al‑Qaeda‑affiliated Nigerian group Ansaru has published new footage showing militants training with assault rifles and machine guns.
A Nigerian militant group aligned with al‑Qaeda has released fresh video material that points to ongoing training and access to modern weapons.
According to an analysis shared on 4 November, the group Jama'atu Ansarul Muslimina fi Biladis Sudan, commonly known as Ansaru, published a new video from Nigeria that includes scenes of its members training.
In the footage, Ansaru militants appear to be armed with an AK‑103 pattern assault rifle, PKM machine guns and AKM or Type 56 rifles. These weapon types were identified by an independent weapons researcher who shared stills and commentary on social media.
Ansaru has long been described as an al‑Qaeda‑affiliated organisation operating in Nigeria. The new video serves as a reminder that it maintains both fighters and firearms despite pressure from Nigerian security forces and competition from other armed groups.
For authorities in Nigeria and neighbouring states, the images are a warning sign that Ansaru could seek to step up operations or at least wants to project that image to supporters and rivals.
The main indicators to follow now are any subsequent claims of attacks by Ansaru, changes in Nigerian troop deployments in areas where the group has been active in the past, and further propaganda releases that might point to specific regions of focus.
