Armed SBU Official Blocks Kyiv Search, Forcing Standoff With Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Detectives

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau says a high-ranking Security Service (SBU) official threatened to use a firearm and refused to let detectives carry out a court-ordered search at his Kyiv property, prompting the arrival of SBU special forces at the scene.

An anti-corruption search in Kyiv escalated into an armed confrontation between Ukraine’s leading graft investigators and a senior official from the domestic security service.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) reported that a high‑ranking official of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) threatened to use firearms to prevent detectives from conducting a search at his property in the capital. NABU said the search was based on a warrant issued by an investigative judge of the High Anti-Corruption Court.

According to NABU, the official refused to let detectives access the premises and warned that he might use a gun. As tensions rose, SBU special forces arrived at the location alongside NABU personnel. There was no immediate public information on whether shots were fired, what alleged offense prompted the search, or the identity of the official involved.

The clash highlights friction between Ukraine’s specialized anti-corruption institutions and parts of its security apparatus at a time when searches and seizures depend on cooperation from powerful agencies.

The next indications of where this case is heading will be whether prosecutors open formal proceedings against the SBU official, how SBU leadership responds to the incident, and what further details NABU releases about the search and its legal basis.
