NABU Says Senior SBU Official Threatened to Use Firearm to Block Kyiv Search

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau says a high-ranking Security Service official threatened to use a firearm and blocked detectives from conducting a court-ordered search at his property in Kyiv, drawing SBU special forces to the scene.

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) says a high-ranking officer of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) threatened to use firearms to stop detectives carrying out a lawful search of his property in Kyiv.

According to NABU, detectives arrived with an order from an investigating judge of the High Anti-Corruption Court and attempted to conduct investigative actions at the site. The bureau says the SBU official responded by threatening to use a firearm and refusing to let them enter. NABU reports that SBU special forces then arrived at the location alongside its own personnel.

The incident, described in an official NABU statement, turned a court-approved search into a confrontation between Ukraine’s main anti-corruption body and its domestic security service. NABU has promised more details, but has not yet released further information about the underlying case or how the standoff was resolved.

For Ukraine, which is trying to pursue high-level corruption cases while fighting a large-scale war, a clash of this sort between key state institutions raises concerns about how far law-enforcement agencies can go when they investigate powerful security officials.

Upcoming signals that will shape perceptions include whether NABU brings formal charges or releases evidence, how SBU leadership responds to the reported actions of the official and the special forces on scene, and whether the High Anti-Corruption Court comments on how its order was carried out.
