Italian Army CH‑47 crashes on EU mission in Bosnia, local media report at least four dead

An Italian Army CH‑47 Chinook helicopter taking part in the EU’s Althea mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina crashed near Brčko, killing at least four and injuring 12, according to local media. The accident highlights the risks faced by crews supporting long‑running stabilization operations.

A helicopter crash in Bosnia and Herzegovina has turned routine European military flights into a tragedy for an Italian unit deployed on a stabilization mission.

An Italian Army CH‑47 Chinook went down near the city of Brčko while participating in the European Union’s EUFOR Althea mission, local media reported late on 29 October. Those outlets said at least four people were killed and 12 injured.

The helicopter was supporting operations by the EU’s military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is tasked with maintaining a safe and secure environment years after the Bosnian war. In the country’s difficult terrain, with mountains, valleys and limited road networks, helicopters are central to moving troops and supplies.

The initial reports did not provide details on the cause of the crash. There were no early indications of hostile fire in the information released so far. In similar missions, accidents have often been linked to weather, technical problems or human error, but investigators will have to establish what happened in this case.

For Italy, the loss of a CH‑47 and trained personnel is a significant blow during an overseas deployment that has typically received little public attention.

The crash is also a reminder that even in missions described as stabilization operations, flight crews operate in demanding conditions.

Key developments to watch will include the findings of any official investigation, political reactions in Rome and Brussels, and possible adjustments EUFOR Althea might make to its flight operations or posture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
