Ukrainian special forces say they ambushed GRU unit, neutralizing two groups and capturing soldier

Ukrainian special forces report they neutralized two groups from Russia’s 10th Separate Guards Special Purpose Brigade, part of the GRU, in a counter-sabotage ambush that ended with one Russian soldier captured alive.

Ukrainian special forces say they carried out a counter-sabotage operation against an elite Russian military intelligence unit, claiming to have neutralized two groups from the 10th Separate Guards Special Purpose Brigade and taken one of its soldiers prisoner.

According to Ukrainian accounts released in the early hours of 27 October, the operation was based on intelligence about the movement of Russian special-purpose personnel. Ukrainian troops set an ambush along the expected route. When the Russian groups appeared, the Ukrainians opened fire and then cleared the area.

The Russian personnel are described as belonging to the 10th Separate Guards Special Purpose Brigade of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of Russia’s General Staff. Units of this type are typically used for reconnaissance and sabotage in contested zones near or behind the front.

Neither side has provided details on the location of the clash, the number of Russian soldiers involved, or casualties beyond the Ukrainian claim that two groups were neutralized and one soldier was captured.

For Ukraine, holding a captured member of a GRU special-purpose brigade offers potential intelligence value about Russian operating methods and tasking. For Russia, losses from such formations erode a pool of specialized personnel that is harder to replace than regular infantry.

Signals to track now include any Ukrainian release of footage or further information about the captured soldier, indirect Russian confirmation through references to losses in the 10th Brigade, and reports of follow-on Ukrainian actions against other GRU-linked elements along the front.
