Russian offensive on Omelnyk axis seeks flank against Ukraine’s positions near Orikhiv
Russian forces are pressing an offensive northeast of Orikhiv in the Omelnyk direction, where they aim to build a right flank that could support an encirclement of the city, according to frontline reporting. Ukrainian positions closer to Orikhiv have recently improved, but the wider sector remains under pressure.
Russian troops are intensifying attacks along the Omelnyk axis in Zaporizhzhia Oblast in an effort to threaten the right flank of Ukrainian positions around Orikhiv.
Reporting early on 25 October describes a situation that has become less favourable for Ukraine northeast of Orikhiv, even as conditions closer to the city itself have improved. Russian forces are continuing their offensive in the Omelnyk direction with the stated goal of creating a large right flank that could be used to encircle Orikhiv at a later stage.
The strikes are concentrated on two sectors: the area between Rabotyne and Verbove, and the line running from Pyatykhatky to Zherebyanky. These settlements were already well known from earlier fighting, when Ukrainian units pushed into them in an attempt to break through Russian lines toward deeper occupied territory.
As Russian units push in these zones, Ukrainian defenders face the risk that routes into and out of Orikhiv could come under fire from the side. Supply roads that currently feel secure might be brought into range, making frontline positions harder to sustain without exposing troops and logistics columns to flanking attacks.
Settlements along the contested axes are under growing strain. Villages, farmland, and small roadside communities in the Rabotyne–Verbove and Pyatykhatky–Zherebyanky areas have already endured shelling and drone surveillance. A lasting Russian advance would likely bring more fortifications, minefields, and heavy vehicle traffic, cutting into local movement and agriculture.
Operationally, Orikhiv anchors a section of Ukraine’s southern front. Earlier Ukrainian progress near Rabotyne and Verbove threatened to destabilise Russian defences further south. The current Russian push around Omelnyk appears aimed at reducing that pressure by threatening Orikhiv from another direction.
The fighting here shows that the Zaporizhzhia front remains fluid. Neither side has achieved a sudden breakthrough, yet both keep looking for angles where relatively modest territorial changes can shift artillery ranges and supply patterns.
Signals to monitor in the coming days include whether Russian sources claim new ground between the named villages, whether Ukrainian accounts mention counterattacks or tactical withdrawals in the Omelnyk sector, and any references to an emerging encirclement risk for Orikhiv in official or semi-official reporting.
