Russia Says 630 Drones Headed Toward Moscow Region as Strikes Reported in Lipetsk and Other Areas

Moscow’s mayor says air defences confronted about 630 drones heading toward the region overnight, as a residential building was reportedly hit in Lipetsk and drones were shot down over Tula, Voronezh and Belgorod.

Residents in several regions of western Russia faced a night of drone activity and air‑defence fire as officials reported an unusually large number of unmanned aircraft heading toward the Moscow area and at least one strike on a residential building.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that between about 20:30 on 21 October and 04:00 on 22 October, air‑defence systems engaged roughly 630 drones that were heading toward the Moscow region. The figure comes from Sobyanin’s statement and has not been independently confirmed, but it would represent one of the largest claimed drone salvos against the capital’s wider airspace since the war began.

Further south, reports from Lipetsk said a residential building was struck during the same time frame, and that loud explosions were heard in the city. There was no immediate public information on casualties in Lipetsk. The incident points to the risk for people living in ordinary housing blocks as drones and interceptors operate overhead.

Other regional authorities reported that drones were shot down over the Tula, Voronezh and Belgorod regions. These areas form a belt south and south‑west of Moscow that has increasingly come under attack, with air‑defence units now routinely operating over cities that previously saw themselves as far from active hostilities.

The reported spread of engagements across multiple regions suggests Russian air‑defence units were tracking and trying to intercept drones along several approach routes toward key population and industrial centres.

Confirmation of damage sites in Lipetsk and other regions, clearer information from Russian authorities on interceptions, and any claim of responsibility from the attacking side will indicate whether this was an isolated surge in drone activity or the opening of a new phase of long‑range strikes deeper into Russian territory.
