UN Food Agency Cuts Gaza Aid to 1.1 Million People as Funding Falls Short

The UN World Food Program has reduced monthly assistance in Gaza from 1.6 million to 1.1 million people and halved rations for those still covered, after funding shortfalls forced deep cuts to food and cash support.

A funding crisis at the UN World Food Program (WFP) is translating into less food and money for hundreds of thousands of people in the Gaza Strip.

WFP says that due to a lack of funding it has cut the number of its monthly beneficiaries in Gaza from 1.6 million to 1.1 million people. For those who remain in the program, rations have been reduced by half.

Cash assistance has been cut for 75,000 families. The number of daily hot meals has dropped from 250,000 to 150,000. In hard-to-reach areas, families now receive a hot meal only every other day.

These reductions land in a territory where movement, trade and employment are tightly constrained, leaving many households with few alternatives when aid shrinks.

Operationally, WFP is having to decide which communities and categories of recipients to prioritize, a process that can fuel tension in areas where needs are high across the board.

Future conditions will depend on whether donors step up with new funding, whether other agencies adjust their programs to fill some of the gap, and how local authorities handle food access and distribution as WFP’s reach contracts.
