UN Reports Drone Strikes Kill Civilians and Disrupt Flights Across Sudan

UN humanitarians report drone strikes near Khartoum airport, in West Darfur’s Bir Saliba and in South Darfur’s Nyala that killed civilians, including nine children, and forced flight cancellations.

A series of drone strikes in Sudan has killed civilians in several regions and disrupted flights from the capital, according to a UN humanitarian report.

The UN office responsible for tracking the crisis says a drone strike near Khartoum airport killed one civilian and forced flight cancellations. The incident affected operations at a key hub for medical evacuations and aid movements.

In West Darfur, a drone attack on Bir Saliba killed 11 people, including nine children. A separate strike in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, killed at least four people.

The UN did not identify who carried out the strikes. The incidents show drones being used against or near populated areas, with children among the victims in at least one location.

Beyond the immediate casualties, the cancellation of flights in Khartoum hampers the movement of humanitarian staff and supplies. In Darfur, repeated strikes compound insecurity in communities already affected by ground fighting and displacement.

Future UN reporting on the use of drones in Sudan, any moves by the warring parties to restrict strikes near airports and cities, and the ability of aid agencies to continue operating in these areas will indicate whether the situation for civilians is stabilizing or deteriorating further.
