France reports 550,000 at high‑school protests as riots, looting and 1,200 arrests hit cities

France’s Interior Ministry says 550,000 people, including 110,000 in Paris, joined high‑school‑led protests on 17 October, with violent clashes, looting, arson, more than 1,000 arrests and about 150 injured police officers reported as Palestinian flags appeared at some scenes.

Mass protests led by high‑school students in France have spilled into some of the country’s worst street clashes this year, according to official figures and on‑the‑ground accounts.

The French Interior Ministry said 550,000 people took part in what it called a “high school students’ protest” on 17 October across the country, including 110,000 in Paris. Alongside those numbers, officials reported around 1,200 arrests and about 150 police officers injured.

What began as demonstrations evolved in places into riots marked by looting and buildings on fire. Some streets saw violent confrontations between protesters and police, and there were reports and imagery of looters stripping shops while parts of urban areas burned.

The Palestinian flag was present at some protest sites, according to reporting from the scene. One video described by observers showed a French woman trying to talk to looters amid the chaos.

The scale of participation and arrests, combined with the level of violence and damage, has raised questions about how French authorities will handle any follow‑on protests and about the staying power of youth‑driven unrest.

Signals that will show where this goes next include whether turnout holds up in any new demonstrations, how courts handle those among the 1,200 detained, and whether officials adjust protest policing after a day that left hundreds of thousands in the streets, dozens of officers injured and buildings ablaze.
