Ukrainian Units Close to Within 7 km of Velyka Novosilka After Pushing Front Line Forward

Forward Ukrainian assault groups and reconnaissance teams are now less than 7 km from the outskirts of Velyka Novosilka, down from more than 21 km before recent counterattacks, according to battlefield reports. The advance brings Ukrainian forces significantly closer to a town that anchors part of the Donetsk front.

Ukrainian forces have moved their forward elements to within seven kilometres of Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk region, according to battlefield reports, narrowing the gap to a town that helps anchor local Russian positions.

Those reports say that before recent counterattacks the front line lay more than 21 kilometres from the town’s outskirts. That implies a Ukrainian advance of over 14 kilometres, achieved by a mix of assault units and small diversionary and reconnaissance groups.

Operating within single‑digit kilometres of Velyka Novosilka allows Ukrainian teams to put more pressure on Russian logistics routes and staging areas around the town. Such proximity makes it easier to observe vehicle movements, adjust artillery fire onto depots and strongpoints, and look for weak links in defensive lines.

For Russian troops in and around the town, the reduced distance shortens warning times and complicates resupply. Routes that were previously out of range of most Ukrainian forward patrols and some weapons now fall under greater threat.

At the same time, Ukrainian forces pushing this close to a defended settlement expose themselves to concentrated artillery, drones and potential counterattacks if Moscow decides to reinforce the area.

What happens next around Velyka Novosilka will offer clues to whether this is a prelude to a larger attempt to take or encircle the town, or a more limited move aimed at improving local positions. Indicators include visual confirmation of Ukrainian locations from geolocated imagery and any visible Russian redeployments or new fortification work in the sector.
