Germany investigates ex‑BND chief over 2,000 classified files in suspected Azerbaijan‑linked spy case

Former BND president August Hanning has been arrested on suspicion of attempting treason and espionage after allegedly obtaining more than 2,000 classified documents and using them to prepare an analysis for an alleged Azerbaijani intelligence contact, investigators say.

German authorities are probing an unusually high‑level espionage case after arresting former foreign intelligence chief August Hanning on suspicion of attempted treason and espionage.

Hanning, who once headed the BND, is suspected of illegally obtaining more than 2,000 classified documents and using secret information to prepare an analysis for an alleged Azerbaijani intelligence contact. Investigators believe he received the documents from a former subordinate still in government service.

Prosecutors are still examining whether the analysis was ever delivered. At this stage they have not publicly detailed what the material contained or which agencies it came from.

The allegations point to the potential involvement of both a retired top official and at least one serving insider, raising questions about how German services monitor access to sensitive material after senior figures leave office.

If investigators confirm that an analysis based on 2,000 classified documents was passed to a foreign contact, the case would rank among the more serious intelligence breaches in recent German history.

The next steps will be whether prosecutors move from suspicion to formal charges, how many current officials are implicated in supplying the files, and whether Berlin chooses to confront Baku if the alleged Azerbaijani link is substantiated.
