Drone Attack Sinks Ship in Bulgaria’s Black Sea Zone, Triggers Emergency Response
Drones struck two merchant ships east of Bulgaria’s coast in the Black Sea, sinking one vessel and injuring crew on another. It’s the first reported attack on shipping in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone and has prompted a large-scale rescue effort and an emergency government meeting.
A drone strike on commercial shipping in the Black Sea has left one vessel sunk and another burning in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, pushing the war’s risks deeper into European waters.
Bulgarian reports say two merchant ships were attacked by drones east of Cape St. Athanasius and the town of Byala on 6 October. One of the ships went down and its crew is missing. The second caught fire; eighteen crew members were evacuated, and some were injured.
BGNES and other local outlets describe a major rescue operation under way in the area, with Bulgarian sailors conducting search and rescue in the Black Sea off the country’s eastern coast. Conditions at sea and the time needed to reach the site will heavily influence the chances of finding survivors from the sunken vessel.
According to Bulgarian-language reporting, the ships involved include the merchant vessel “Alfa Watan” and another vessel whose full identification has not yet been confirmed. The attack is described as the first on commercial ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, a stretch of sea where the coastal state has special rights over resources but not full territorial control.
A separate report from BGNES, citing Bulgarian sources, attributes the strike to Russian drones. It says Russian drones attacked the two merchant ships off Bulgaria, leading to one sinking with its crew missing and the evacuation of 18 crew from the second vessel, some of them injured. No government has yet issued a public, formal attribution, and there has been no public comment from Moscow.
The Bulgarian government has called an emergency meeting in response. How officials characterize the incident — as an isolated attack on shipping, part of a wider pattern of drone use in the Black Sea, or something more politically charged — will shape what Sofia asks from partners and how shipowners and insurers reassess the routes off Bulgaria’s coast in the days ahead.
