US Ends Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Relocates Command Headquarters to Jordan

The United States has completed its troop withdrawal from Iraq and formally ended Operation Inherent Resolve, with the mission’s headquarters moving to Jordan, according to initial reports. The change reshapes the US military presence in the Middle East.

The United States has completed its troop withdrawal from Iraq and brought Operation Inherent Resolve to an official close, according to reports early Sunday. The mission’s headquarters have been moved to Jordan, marking a significant change in how Washington positions its forces in the region.

Operation Inherent Resolve was the name for the US-led effort that backed local partners in Iraq and neighboring areas in fighting the Islamic State group. In recent years, US forces in Iraq focused mainly on training, advising, and limited operations rather than large-scale combat.

Ending the mission and pulling out remaining troops alters the security landscape inside Iraq. Domestic forces will now bear greater responsibility for handling armed groups and any extremist cells with less direct US backing on the ground.

For US personnel, the shift to Jordan reduces exposure to attacks on Iraqi bases that had periodically targeted facilities housing American troops. It doesn’t remove regional risk, but it does relocate the core command structure away from Iraq itself.

Strategically, moving the headquarters to Jordan allows Washington to retain a regional presence while answering long-standing political pressure in Iraq for a US exit. How Iraqi forces perform in the absence of US troops, and whether Washington pursues new security arrangements from outside Iraq’s borders, will determine what this new phase of US involvement looks like.
