Israeli Airstrike on Gaza Apartment Kills Five Palestinians in Reported Assassination Attempt

An Israeli strike on the ground floor of a residential building in Gaza City’s Rimal neighborhood killed five Palestinians, including four women, in an operation Palestinian channels describe as a failed assassination attempt.

A late-night Israeli airstrike on a residential building in western Gaza City has left five Palestinians dead and revived scrutiny of how targeted operations are carried out in densely populated areas.

Around 1:30 a.m., Israeli Air Force fighter jets hit the ground floor of the Al-Issala building in the Rimal neighborhood, according to Palestinian-affiliated channels. Those outlets framed the attack as an assassination attempt on a senior official. They did not provide confirmed details on the intended target’s identity or whether that person was present.

The same reports listed five fatalities, four of them women. The dead were named as Maria al-Najjar, identified as Christian; her mother, Misa’a Ibrahim; Dr. Yasmin Albubu; and her mother, Halom Alb—her surname appears cut off in the initial lists—along with a fifth victim whose identity was less clearly reported. Additional people were said to be injured.

Separate accounts also described an Israeli airstrike on a residential apartment in western Gaza City that killed five Palestinians, including four women, and noted that a mother and her daughter, and a doctor and her mother, were among the dead. These versions did not explicitly mention the assassination attempt framing but matched the casualty pattern from Rimal.

The deaths illustrate how attempts to hit specific figures can reverberate through surrounding families. Maria al-Najjar and her mother were part of Gaza’s small Christian community. The reported loss of Dr. Albubu removes a medical professional at a time when Gaza’s health system is already struggling with repeated strikes, damaged facilities, and high casualty numbers.

From the Israeli military’s perspective, the Rimal strike fits a broader pattern of using airpower to target individuals and infrastructure linked to armed groups operating inside urban neighborhoods. Palestinian channels, in contrast, present it as another example of civilians bearing the cost of operations whose intended goals remain publicly unconfirmed.

What will matter in the coming days is whether Israeli authorities acknowledge the strike as a targeted operation and identify the figure they were seeking, and how Palestinian factions in Gaza choose to respond to a raid that killed named civilians in a central district of the city.
