Satellite Fire Data Shows Major Blazes at Russia’s Tsumbulova Drone Site After Reported Ukrainian Strike
NASA FIRMS satellite data shows multiple large fires at the Tsumbulova Test Site in Russia’s Oryol Oblast after reported Ukrainian drone strikes on a facility used to launch Geran-2, Geran-4, and Geran-5 drones.
Multiple large fires broke out at the Tsumbulova Test Site in Russia’s Oryol Oblast after Ukrainian drone strikes, according to satellite fire detections and battlefield reporting from 3 October.
NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) recorded several major heat signatures at the Tsumbulova site, indicating large fires burning across the area. The data does not on its own confirm the cause or the exact facilities hit, but it aligns with reports that Ukrainian drones struck the complex.
The Tsumbulova Test Site is used to launch Geran-2 drones, as well as Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet-powered drones. It is described as the largest drone launching site in Russia and has been undergoing rapid expansion over the last two years.
The site has recently been repeatedly attacked by Ukrainian forces, according to the reporting. The latest fires suggest that the campaign against Tsumbulova is continuing, directly affecting a hub that supports Russian long-range drone strikes.
Because Tsumbulova is a major launch point for Geran-series drones, damage there could complicate preparations for future attacks using these systems. Launch pads, storage areas, and support infrastructure are harder to replace quickly than individual drones assembled elsewhere.
Ukrainian strikes on Tsumbulova fit a pattern of deeper attacks on Russian territory, including oil facilities, airfields, and logistics hubs, aimed at putting pressure on Moscow’s ability to sustain its operations.
Key signals in the coming days will be updated satellite imagery showing the extent of destruction at Tsumbulova and any observable changes in the scale or direction of Russian Geran drone launches that appear linked to disruptions at this Oryol Oblast site.
