Russian Geran Jet-Drone Strike Shuts Kyiv’s Northern Bridge, Halting Traffic Across the Dnieper

A Russian Geran-4/5 jet-powered drone struck Kyiv’s Northern Bridge over the Dnieper River, closing the crossing in both directions, damaging the roadway and trolleybus lines, and causing major traffic jams across the capital.

A Russian Geran-4/5 jet-powered drone strike on Kyiv’s Northern Bridge has shut one of the capital’s main crossings over the Dnieper River, forcing a full closure and snarling traffic on 3 October.

According to battlefield reports, the Russian drone hit the “Northern” road bridge across the Dnieper River in Kyiv this morning. City mayor Vitali Klitschko reported an impact on the bridge, with emergency services heading to the scene.

Local authorities said the blast damaged the road surface and the overhead contact network used by trolleybuses. Traffic from the city’s left bank to the right bank was blocked, and the bridge was closed in both directions after the strike, leading to large traffic jams in parts of Kyiv.

In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defence said it had targeted the “Northern” road bridge across the Dnieper, describing it as a route used to transport troops and logistics to the frontline. The ministry also claimed strikes on the “Hostomel” logistics centre in the city of Hostomel, which it alleged stores military equipment.

Footage from Kyiv showed the moment a Geran drone hit bridge structures, including strikes on the cables of the Southern Bridge, with coordinates posted for the impacts. Another reported Geran-4/5 jet-drone strike hit the “Northern” Bridge just before authorities closed it to traffic.

The Northern Bridge is a key artery for commuters and public transport crossing the river between Kyiv’s left and right banks. With the crossing closed and trolleybus power lines damaged, residents are being forced onto already busy alternative routes, adding delays and complicating daily movement around the city.

Russian planners describe such crossings as military logistics corridors, while for Kyiv’s population they are basic infrastructure for work, services, and emergency response. The drone strike shows how the same structure can be treated as a frontline target and a civilian lifeline at the same time.

What matters next is how long the Northern Bridge remains out of service and whether more Dnieper crossings come under similar drone attack, which would further strain both civilian mobility and Ukrainian logistics around the capital.
