New War Memorials in Russian Towns Mark Local Soldiers Killed in Ukraine

Russian small towns and cities are adding commemoration yards, memorial walls, and statues to honor soldiers from their communities killed in Ukraine, including a Rosgvardia special operations major.

Across Russia, new memorials are appearing in smaller towns and cities that list the names and honor the images of local soldiers killed in the war in Ukraine.

Recent reporting describes commemoration yards and walls in these communities, inscribed with the names of fallen Russian soldiers from the same town or area. Some locations also feature statues dedicated to special operations forces and other notable servicemen.

One highlighted example is a statue of Major Marat Tibilov, the commander of the fire support group of the 607th Center for Special Operations of the Rosgvardia. He was killed on 28 March 2025 in the Kurakhove area of Ukraine. The statue presents him as a local figure of significance and ties his death directly to the wider campaign.

These memorials indicate how deeply wartime losses are being felt beyond major cities. When names from a single town appear together on walls or plaques, the scale and distribution of casualties become visible in everyday public spaces rather than remaining confined to official statistics.

The spread and style of these commemoration sites will be an important signal in the months ahead. Tracking where new yards, walls, and statues are built, and how prominently they reference the fighting in Ukraine, will offer another perspective on how the human cost of the war is being acknowledged and framed inside Russia.
