Russia’s 173‑Drone Barrage Batters Ukrainian Cities Despite 134 Intercepts, Killing Civilians
Russia launched 173 drones across Ukraine overnight, Ukraine’s Air Force says, with 134 downed or suppressed, yet strikes and debris still damaged homes, shops and warehouses in Kyiv, Odesa region and Zaporizhzhia, where two women were killed and a child was wounded.
Ukraine’s air defenses brought down most of the drones Russia sent overnight, but the scale of the barrage still left cities burned and civilians dead.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched 173 drones overnight on 25–26 September, including more than 50 jet‑powered Shaheds and other unmanned aerial vehicles. Ukrainian forces say they downed or suppressed 134 of them. Official reporting notes impacts at 19 locations and debris from intercepted drones falling on eight more.
In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported several incidents. In the Solomianskyi district, a drone fell on an office building, sparking a fire. In a separate case in the same district, the fall of a drone caused a fire in a five‑story residential building and a shop located on the ground floor; preliminary reports said two people were injured. In the Darnytskyi district, a fire broke out on territory next to warehouse buildings and was later extinguished. In the Obolonskyi district, debris fell near a residential building, damaging and blowing out windows.
Commercial sites were also hit. In Kyiv, a drone strike damaged an Auchan store in the Lavina Mall shopping center. The shop is temporarily closed, according to local reports.
Odesa region authorities said that at night the enemy carried out a massive attack on civilian infrastructure. In the south of the region, facades and glazing were damaged at more than 10 private and multi‑story residential buildings, as well as at a hotel‑restaurant complex and administrative buildings on an enterprise’s grounds.
In Zaporizhzhia, regional reports said Russian forces struck a private house with a drone. Two women were killed. A four‑year‑old boy and a 45‑year‑old man were wounded, and the house where they were staying was destroyed.
Separately, Ukraine’s Air Force reported that 134 of the 173 enemy drones were shot down or suppressed. Officials stressed that debris from destroyed drones can still cause damage and casualties when it falls on homes, businesses or infrastructure.
The key developments to track now are whether Russia continues using large mixed swarms of drones, including jet‑powered Shaheds, and how Ukrainian authorities adjust civilian protection measures in cities that are repeatedly hit by both direct strikes and falling wreckage.
