President Volodymyr Zelensky said footage shows the new system taking down a Geran‑5, described as the fastest Shahed‑series drone, with speeds around 600 km/h. Ukrainian border‑guard pilots from the “Phoenix” unit also reported locating and destroying a Russian Nebo‑U radar system worth an estimated $100 million, underscoring Kyiv’s growing ability to target high‑value assets behind the front.

The strategic consequence is a growing mismatch between what war looks like in theory inside NATO planning documents and what it looks like in practice over Ukraine’s skies. Western states have poured money into high‑end air and missile defenses, but they remain vulnerable to being swarmed by large numbers of cheap, semi‑autonomous drones that can search for gaps, change course mid‑flight and force defenders to waste costly interceptors on low‑value targets. At the same time, Ukraine’s success in jury‑rigging its own interceptors and taking out systems like the Nebo‑U radar shows how quickly a motivated mid‑sized power can innovate under fire.

That contrast—between Ukraine’s battlefield improvisation and NATO’s slower procurement cycles—is at the core of Rinkēvičs’ warning. If alliance members don’t translate the lessons of Ukraine into concrete deployments soon, they could find that the multi‑billion‑euro systems rolling off production lines in 2027 were designed for yesterday’s war.
