Rheinmetall’s 400-Per-Year Air-Defense Surge Arms Europe and Ukraine for Drone and Missile Wars

German defense group Rheinmetall plans to ramp up output of its Skynex and Skyranger air-defense systems to about 400 units a year by 2027, split across new capacity in Switzerland, Italy, and Germany. The expansion aims to meet soaring demand from Ukraine and European states scrambling to protect cities and forces from drones and missiles.

Europe’s rearmament is starting to look less like a slogan and more like factory schedules. Rheinmetall, one of the continent’s key defense manufacturers, plans to boost annual production of its Skynex and Skyranger short-range air-defense systems to around 400 units by 2027, effectively turning out eight systems a week once fully ramped.

The company intends to distribute this capacity across three countries: about 140 systems a year in Switzerland, another 140 in Italy, and 100 in Germany. Ukraine is already operating Skynex systems, and deliveries of Skyranger 35s mounted on refurbished Leopard 1 tank chassis began in November 2025, underscoring how directly this industrial shift is tied to the current war.

Skynex and Skyranger are designed to counter exactly the threats that have defined recent conflicts: small drones, cruise missiles, and low-flying aircraft that slip under older radar and missile defenses. They use rapid-fire guns, advanced sensors, and programmable ammunition to create a dense defensive bubble around troops, infrastructure, and urban areas.

For Ukrainian soldiers and civilians, more of these systems mean a better chance of shooting down the drones that now regularly target trenches, artillery positions, and apartment blocks. For European militaries, they offer a way to plug glaring gaps in short-range air defense that were ignored for decades as budgets shrank and focus shifted to overseas expeditions instead of homeland protection.

The human implication is stark. Without credible short-range air defenses, power plants, hospitals, rail hubs, and fuel depots turn into soft targets, and civilian life is constantly exposed to low-cost, high-frequency attacks. As Kyiv’s experience has shown, defending the last kilometers of airspace over a city can be the difference between a near miss and a mass-casualty strike.

At the strategic level, Rheinmetall’s expansion is one piece of a broader European effort to rebuild industrial capacity for a more contested era. Producing 400 systems a year is not just about Ukraine; it’s about giving NATO states the option to equip their own forces at scale, create reserve stocks, and maintain a pipeline of replacements as technology evolves.

Splitting production across Switzerland, Italy, and Germany also spreads economic and political dividends. Jobs and investment shore up domestic support for defense spending, while multiple production sites reduce the risk that a single bottleneck or attack could knock out supply. For buyers, a diversified base is a signal that these systems will be supported and upgraded for years, not treated as a one-off wartime rush job.

The memorable takeaway is that air defense is becoming a mass-market product in Europe, not a boutique capability. In a world of cheap drones and precision weapons, protecting the sky is no longer a niche military task; it’s the price of keeping modern societies functioning under threat.
