U.S. intelligence has concluded that China may try to obtain sensitive F‑35 fighter technology through its ties with Saudi Arabia, sharpening questions over how much cutting‑edge hardware Washington can share as Riyadh deepens links with Beijing.

U.S. intelligence agencies now see a specific route by which China could try to get at the technology behind America’s premier stealth jet: Saudi Arabia.

A recent assessment circulated in Washington finds that Beijing may attempt to access F‑35 fighter technology through its growing engagement with Riyadh. The concern arises as China expands defense, industrial, and technology projects in the kingdom at the same time Saudi Arabia seeks advanced Western weaponry and a bigger role as a regional security hub.

The F‑35 underpins U.S. and allied airpower. It’s a stealth multirole aircraft whose edge comes as much from its sensors, data‑fusion software, and electronic warfare systems as from its airframe. Any path that lets Chinese actors study its components, maintenance systems, or data networks would be treated in Washington as a direct threat to U.S. and allied air dominance. Intelligence officials now judge that such a path could run through Saudi projects where Chinese personnel, equipment, or joint ventures overlap with Western defense infrastructure.

The assessment does not accuse Riyadh of deliberately handing over secrets. For Saudi pilots, technicians, and officers, warnings of this kind can reshape daily decisions. They can slow or alter which systems they train on, which local firms are allowed anywhere near sensitive hardware, and how far the U.S. is prepared to go on co‑production or technology transfer. For American and European defense manufacturers, it could affect billions in potential Gulf contracts if governments conclude that espionage risks are too high to deploy their most advanced systems in an environment where China also operates.

The assessment lands in the middle of a delicate strategic balancing act. Saudi Arabia has spent years reducing its dependence on the U.S., signing major deals with China in energy, telecommunications, and ballistic missiles while still seeking U.S. security guarantees and access to top‑tier Western defense technology. Washington is trying to contain Chinese military‑industrial reach without pushing Gulf partners into Beijing’s arms.

How the F‑35 is handled crystallizes that tension. If the U.S. tightens controls sharply, it risks signaling that even long‑time partners can’t be fully trusted, which could steer them toward Chinese or Russian suppliers. If it relaxes restrictions for geopolitical reasons, it accepts a greater chance that China learns how to better track, jam, or copy elements of its most important combat jet.

China has worked for years to narrow the gap with U.S. stealth and avionics, fielding its J‑20 fighter and seeking foreign technology by legal and illegal means. Any access, even indirect, to the F‑35 ecosystem—software updates, test gear, maintenance routines, mission data files—would help it refine counters or inform its next‑generation designs.

Signs to watch include whether Washington slows or conditions any F‑35‑related talks with Gulf states, whether Saudi authorities impose new limits on Chinese participation in sensitive infrastructure, and whether Beijing responds by offering Riyadh more advanced systems of its own.
