Planned Zelensky–Trump Meeting Talks Put Ukraine’s War Aims Into U.S. Political Spotlight
Ukraine and the United States are working on a possible meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump during the Ukrainian president’s upcoming U.S. visit, as Kyiv also plans dozens of other bilateral talks and outreach to members of Congress.
Ukraine is preparing for a U.S. visit by President Volodymyr Zelensky that could include a closely watched meeting with Donald Trump, alongside a packed schedule of other diplomacy in Washington.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi said Ukraine and the United States are working on the possible Zelensky–Trump meeting and that their teams are discussing the content to make it as substantive as possible. He added that Zelensky’s trip would have a much broader agenda, with dozens of bilateral meetings and potential contacts with members of Congress.
The outreach comes as fighting on the ground continues. On the Kupiansk axis in Kharkiv region, pilots from Ukraine’s 23rd Separate Regiment are described as striking Russian positions around Dvorichna to clear the way for assault units. Ukraine’s 77th Airmobile Brigade reports using medium‑range strike drones against Russian rear logistics, hitting vehicles and trucks and locating and striking a BM‑27 Uragan multiple launch rocket system.
Russia has kept up its own attacks. Regional authorities said Russian forces hit the centre of Kropyvnytskyi, wounding four people and damaging a kindergarten, cars and private houses. Kyiv also declared a yellow‑level air‑raid alert due to the threat from drones.
Diplomatically, a meeting between Zelensky and Trump would unfold against this military backdrop and as Kyiv continues to seek long‑term security guarantees and funding. Tykhyi’s comments suggest Ukrainian officials want to use the visit to make the case directly to U.S. political figures across the spectrum, not just the current administration.
Signals to watch now include whether the meeting with Trump is formally confirmed and how both sides frame it, the tone and outcomes of Zelensky’s contacts with members of Congress, and how Russia’s information channels portray any U.S. discussions about Ukraine’s war aims and support.
