Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says its air defenses have shot down a U.S. MQ‑9 “Reaper” drone over Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most sensitive oil shipping lanes.
In a statement dated 16 September, the IRGC said the unmanned aircraft was brought down by Iranian air‑defense systems operating around Qeshm, an island that sits along the Strait of Hormuz. The corps described the drone as an American MQ‑9 and claimed it was the 52nd U.S. MQ‑9 destroyed so far during the war.
There has been no public confirmation from the United States, and no widely verified images of wreckage have surfaced, so the incident remains an Iranian claim rather than an independently corroborated fact.
MQ‑9 Reapers are long‑endurance surveillance and strike drones that the U.S. uses heavily for intelligence gathering and, when authorized, precision attacks.
