U.S. Puts First Weapon in Orbit as China and Russia Warn Against Arms Race in Space
The United States has for the first time confirmed deploying a weapon in Earth’s orbit to provide "space control" and protect its forces from hostile satellites. China and Russia responded by calling for space to remain free of weapons and urging Washington to halt its military buildup in orbit.
An American weapon is now operating in Earth’s orbit, with Washington openly acknowledging it for the first time and rival powers warning it could fuel an arms race in space.
U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said the system is already “on orbit” and is intended to provide “space control” and protect U.S. forces from hostile actions, Defense One reports. He did not disclose what kind of weapon it is, what it can do, or where exactly it is positioned, but the description implies it could be used against hostile satellites targeting U.S. forces.
The move marks a clear shift from ground- or air-launched anti-satellite tests to an explicitly acknowledged weapon stationed in orbit itself. Rather than simply supporting operations on the ground, the system is described as a tool for controlling activity in space, where military and civilian satellites carry communications, navigation, weather and surveillance services.
China quickly set out its position. The country’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing opposes any arms race in outer space or attempts to weaponize it or turn it into a war zone. It urged the United States to stop expanding its military buildup in space and called on Washington to safeguard global strategic stability with concrete actions.
Moscow struck a similar tone. The Kremlin said Russia believes space should remain free of weapons and that it is counting on broad international support for the complete demilitarization of space. Russian officials paired that message with separate statements about ongoing strikes in the war with Ukraine, underlining how space-based systems already underpin modern conflicts.
For armed forces, putting a weapon into orbit changes how they think about protecting or threatening satellites that carry communications, missile warning and other critical services. A system meant to provide space control can be seen as both a shield and a potential sword against the networks that modern militaries rely on.
For civilians and commercial operators, the risk is more indirect but still real. Telecoms, broadcasters, banks and shipping companies all depend on satellites. If space becomes a more active military arena, satellite designers, insurers and regulators will have to plan for higher chances of interference or damage.
The next signs to watch will come on two tracks. Technically, analysts will scrutinize public tracking data and official hints for clues about which U.S. military spacecraft might have new roles or capabilities. Diplomatically, any new proposals from China, Russia or U.S. partners for limits or rules on space weapons—and how Washington answers them—will show whether this first confirmed orbital weapon leads toward new agreements or a looser competition in orbit.
