Iran request for Russian Geran drones would turn original tech transfer back on the U.S. and Israel

Iran has asked Moscow to supply its newest Russian‑developed Geran attack drones for possible use against Israel and the United States, the Financial Times reports, in a move that would send upgraded versions of Iranian-origin designs back toward U.S. and Israeli forces.

Iran is seeking to buy advanced Russian‑made Geran attack drones for potential strikes on Israel and U.S. forces, closing a technological loop built over years of wartime cooperation between Moscow and Tehran.

The request was reported by the Financial Times and attributed to Western security officials and a person close to the Kremlin. Iran and Russia have not publicly confirmed it, and it’s unclear whether Moscow has agreed to provide the latest Geran variants. Even at the level of a formal ask, though, the move shows how much the relationship has shifted: Russia once bought Iranian‑designed drones for its war in Ukraine, and Iran is now trying to import Russian‑developed successors.

Iran originally supplied Shahed‑series loitering munitions and related technology to Russia. Moscow rebranded and adapted them as Geran systems, then used them in large numbers against Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure. Those drones gave Russian forces a relatively cheap way to saturate air defenses with hard‑to‑stop, one‑way attack aircraft.

If Russia now sends its newest Geran models back the other way, Iran would gain a more refined, combat‑tested version of its own original concept. For Israeli planners and U.S. commanders in the region, that’s a concrete concern. Geran‑class attack drones can travel long distances, carry substantial warheads and be launched in swarms designed to overload missile defenses.

For civilians in Israel, Gulf states and around U.S. bases across the Middle East, more capable Iranian‑operated drones would mean a denser web of airborne threats layered on top of existing missile and rocket arsenals. Air‑defense crews already stretched intercepting rockets from Gaza, missiles from Yemen and occasional volleys from Lebanon would have to prepare for more frequent, more varied low‑cost drone salvos.

Strategically, a two‑way Geran exchange would tighten a military‑industrial axis that has already drawn sanctions and concern in Western capitals. Technology that once flowed mainly from Russia to Iran in the form of tanks and aircraft now moves both ways in the unmanned world, with frontline experience in Ukraine feeding designs that may later threaten U.S. ships, bases and partners in the Middle East.

The implications extend beyond the U.S.–Iran–Israel confrontation. Ukraine faces an adversary whose drone fleet continues to evolve through joint combat experience. Countries from the Caucasus to the Gulf are watching how inexpensive attack drones are changing the balance between offense and defense.

The pivotal questions now are whether Russia accepts the Iranian request, which Geran variants it might send if it does, and how quickly Iran could integrate any new systems into its own networks or hand them to regional proxies. Clear evidence of deliveries—through wreckage, imagery or official acknowledgment—would mark a new phase in drone proliferation and force air‑defense planners in both Europe and the Middle East to rethink their assumptions again.
