Xi Says China Will Lead BRICS AI Push as Beijing Floats Open‑Source Platform

China’s Xi Jinping has said Beijing will take the lead in fostering AI and technology cooperation among BRICS members, alongside a proposal for an open‑source AI platform tailored to the bloc.

China is positioning itself at the centre of artificial intelligence cooperation among the BRICS group.

On 13 September, Xi Jinping said China will take the lead in fostering AI and technology cooperation among BRICS nations, according to public reports. In parallel, teleSUR English reported that China has proposed an open‑source AI platform for BRICS at the summit.

The initiative is being discussed as BRICS expands its ambitions beyond its core members and as more countries from the Global South look to the bloc for alternatives in technology and finance.

At the same meeting, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi argued that BRICS solutions shouldn’t be limited to the bloc itself and should be adaptable and accessible for the wider Global South. He also said BRICS countries plan to create an infectious‑disease outbreak response system, in a context that also mentions pandemics, climate disasters and supply‑chain disruptions.

Ugandan journalist Waniala Paul has described Uganda’s move to join BRICS as a partner country in 2025 as a way to amplify the Global South’s voice, noting that the summit in New Delhi has seen what he called the largest representation of Africans.

China’s offer to lead AI cooperation and its proposal for an open‑source platform sit within that broader push to build BRICS‑centred systems that can be used by emerging economies.

The concrete markers to watch are which BRICS and partner states sign on to use or host elements of any shared AI platform, how it’s governed, and how it interacts with other BRICS connectivity projects and response systems now on the table.
