Drone Alert Shuts Vilnius Airport as Lithuania Scrambles NATO Fighters
Lithuania issued a drone alert in Vilnius, closed the capital’s main airport and diverted flights to Kaunas, while NATO fighter jets took off after reports of a possible unmanned incursion.
A suspected drone in Lithuanian airspace has been enough to close the capital’s airport and send NATO jets into the air.
On 13 September, Lithuania declared a drone alert in Vilnius and shut Vilnius International Airport, rerouting aircraft to Kaunas. Reports say NATO fighter aircraft were airborne following indications of a drone incursion into Lithuanian airspace.
Separately, Lithuania’s armed forces and the National Crisis Management Centre announced a yellow‑level air danger alert because of a possible drone, calling on residents to move to safe places and stay away from suspicious objects.
Public reporting hasn’t yet confirmed the drone’s origin, model or launch point, or whether any object was ultimately intercepted. What’s clear is that authorities treated the alert seriously enough to halt civil aviation at the main airport and rely on alternative capacity in Kaunas.
The region is already on edge over airspace risks. Poland has repeatedly raised aircraft in response to Russian missile and drone activity near its borders, and Lithuanian leaders have been outspoken about monitoring nearby Russian and Belarusian forces.
The next questions are whether Vilnius officials attribute the alert to a specific source, whether similar incidents follow along the Lithuanian and Polish borders, and how NATO adjusts air‑policing and civil‑aviation procedures in light of a single drone report being able to shut down a capital’s air hub.
