Russian barrage on Kyiv and key regions kills civilians and sets major industrial sites ablaze
Russia’s first major strike after a three‑day ceasefire hit Kyiv and multiple Ukrainian regions overnight, killing at least two people, injuring others and igniting large fires at homes, warehouses and industrial plants.
Russia ended a three‑day temporary ceasefire with a large overnight barrage of drones and missiles across Ukraine, killing civilians and setting major fires in Kyiv and other regions.
In the capital, at least two civilians were killed and at least ten injured in the combined missile and drone attack, according to emergency services and the Kyiv city military administration. Rescue crews pulled 13 people from damaged buildings as they fought fires and cleared rubble.
The Kyiv military administration said the city came under continued attack, with civilian infrastructure damaged at more than 16 locations across Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, Solomianskyi, Podilskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts. In Holosiivskyi, a residential building and an education facility were damaged, and garages and warehouses burned. Other districts reported warehouse fires and falling debris from intercepts.
Nationally, President Volodymyr Zelensky said there were significant damages to residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure in the capital, and that critical infrastructure was hit in Kyiv region. He added that in Odesa region a market was struck, while in Kharkiv two people were wounded and a multi‑storey apartment building was damaged. Russian forces also hit Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions, he said.
Ukraine’s air force reported a large, mixed attack still ongoing in the early morning. It said Russian forces launched ballistic missiles, at least 32 Kh‑101 and Iskander‑K cruise missiles, and 166 attack drones including Shahed and Geran types and other unmanned systems. According to these figures, Ukrainian defenses shot down or suppressed 175 aerial targets, but missile and drone impacts were recorded at 29 locations, with debris from downed weapons falling on nine more.
Kyiv saw multiple industrial sites hit. Open‑source reporting described a large fire at a Tetra Pak multinational food packaging and processing factory in the city’s north following suspected Iskander‑M or KN‑23 ballistic missile strikes. NASA FIRMS satellite fire‑detection data indicated a major blaze near the Tandem container factory in southern Kyiv after several reported Zircon hypersonic cruise missile strikes, and another large fire in an industrial zone in western Kyiv previously targeted by missiles on 20 August 2026.
In Kyiv region, local authorities said a massed combined strike injured at least one person and damaged civilian infrastructure and settlements in several districts. In Brovary district, three private houses and a car were damaged; in Boryspil district, a warehouse, an enterprise and seven trucks were hit; in Fastiv district, three private houses were damaged.
With fires still burning into the morning hours in Kyiv after impacts from around 26 ballistic and cruise missiles, officials warned that updated casualty and damage figures, full assessments from struck industrial sites and any follow‑on waves of Russian attacks would determine how the overnight barrage alters Ukraine’s ability to protect its cities and infrastructure as autumn approaches.
