Iran and Oman in Advanced Talks on Safe Shipping Routes in the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Foreign Ministry says Tehran and Oman are in advanced negotiations to establish safe navigation routes in the Strait of Hormuz, as Iranian-linked media circulate footage showing tanker traffic continuing despite claims of ‘maritime paralysis’.

Iran and Oman are working on an agreement to define safe shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil flows.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Iran and Oman, described as the two coastal states of the strait, are engaged in advanced negotiations to set up safe navigation routes in the area. According to Baqaei, consultations between the two countries are at an advanced stage.

In parallel, Sputnik Iran has released footage it says debunks Western reports of maritime “paralysis” in the region. The video, according to the outlet, shows Iranian oil tankers loading oil routinely and without disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.

For tanker operators and other commercial shipping, agreed navigation lanes could clarify how vessels move through the narrow waterway and which routes Iran and Oman regard as safe. For governments and energy markets, the talks are a signal that the two littoral states are seeking to manage risk in the strait through bilateral arrangements.

The next signs to monitor are whether Tehran and Muscat announce a formal agreement with technical details on routes and procedures, and whether shipping patterns or official guidance to operators change once any deal is in place.
