U.S. Targets Turkey’s Golden Global Bank as EU Joins ‘Economic Outcast’ Pressure on Iran
The U.S. Treasury has cut Turkey-based Golden Global Bank off from the U.S. financial system for allegedly facilitating Revolutionary Guard transactions, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the EU has formally joined a wider operation dubbed “Economic Outcast” against Iran-linked banks.
The United States is escalating financial pressure on Iran by sanctioning a Turkish bank and announcing a broader campaign that now includes the European Union, tightening controls on how Iranian-linked money moves through the global system.
On 4 September, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Turkey‑based Golden Global Bank for facilitating transactions for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, removing the bank’s access to the U.S. financial system. Losing that access makes it far harder for a bank to use the dollar for international payments.
Separately, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the European Union has officially joined an operation called "Economic Outcast". In the same context, he announced new U.S. sanctions against banks linked to Iran, though the available reporting does not list specific additional institutions.
Sanctioning a bank in Turkey, a major regional financial hub, signals that Washington is willing to act against institutions outside Iran that it accuses of helping sanctioned entities. The message to other banks in the region is that handling Iranian-related business can mean losing access to dollar transactions.
Earlier reporting has also noted that Washington is demanding countries stop trading with Tehran and is threatening, among other measures, to sanction and exclude non‑compliant states from the dollar system. That raises the stakes for governments and firms that still buy Iranian oil or do other business with the country.
The combined steps – action against Golden Global Bank, the EU’s participation in "Economic Outcast", and new sanctions on Iran‑linked banks – point to a more coordinated Western approach to constraining Iran’s financial relationships.
Key signs to watch will include how Turkish authorities respond to the Golden Global Bank designation, which other banks are ultimately named under the "Economic Outcast" effort, and whether there is any visible impact on Iran’s ability to move oil revenues and conduct trade through the international banking system.
