Germany Starts Production of 5,000 Long-Range AI-Guided Drones for Ukraine, With One Model Reaching 1,500 km

Germany has begun producing more than 5,000 long-range strike drones for Ukraine under a contract running to mid‑2027, with one model reportedly capable of reaching targets 1,500 kilometers away.

Germany has launched production of thousands of long-range strike drones for Ukraine, deepening its role in supplying offensive capabilities that can reach far beyond the front lines.

According to reporting in Germany, more than 5,000 drones will be produced under a contract that runs through mid‑2027. The systems are being built by Auterion and Ukraine’s Airlogix. One of the drone models is reported to have a range of up to 1,500 kilometers, which would allow strikes deep into Russian-held territory and Russia itself.

The drones are described as equipped with an AI-powered autonomous guidance system designed to counter electronic warfare. Electronic warfare refers to jamming or deceiving communications and navigation signals; autonomy is meant to help drones continue toward their targets even when external links are disrupted.

For Ukraine, a large supply of long-range, one-way attack drones could support more frequent and sustained strikes on oil depots, logistics nodes, and command centers far from the frontline. Such drones offer an alternative to using limited stocks of expensive long-range missiles supplied by partners.

For Russia, the prospect of thousands of additional long-range drones complicates air defense planning over a wide area. Rear bases, supply routes, and critical infrastructure deeper inside the country may have to be protected more heavily, potentially diverting defenses from other sectors.

Germany’s decision to support co-production with a Ukrainian firm also ties Berlin into Ukraine’s evolving drone industry, extending that cooperation over several years. Key developments to watch include any public details from German officials on the drone models and their intended roles, visible shifts in Russian air-defense deployments, and changes in the scale or frequency of Ukrainian long-range drone strikes as production ramps up.
