U.S. Reportedly Pressures UK on Defense Spending, Weighs Falklands Stance as Leverage
Washington is reportedly urging Britain to move faster on higher defense spending and is considering a change in its stance on the Falkland Islands as leverage, The Telegraph reports.
U.S. pressure on Britain over defense spending is reportedly moving into sensitive political territory, with Washington said to be weighing its position on the Falkland Islands as a potential bargaining chip.
According to The Telegraph, Pentagon officials believe the UK is not moving quickly enough toward a new NATO target of spending 5% of GDP on defense and security. This figure is higher than the alliance’s long-standing 2% benchmark and would require a significant shift in British budget priorities.
The same report says U.S. officials are considering whether to adjust Washington’s stance on the Falkland Islands to increase leverage. The islands are a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic, at the center of a long-running sovereignty dispute with Argentina.
Any shift in U.S. policy on the Falklands would be highly sensitive for London and closely watched in South America, where governments monitor outside powers’ positions on the issue.
The reported pressure comes as Washington pushes European allies to carry a larger share of NATO’s conventional defense burden.
