Russia’s Drone War on Ukraine’s Grid Puts Chernihiv Back in the Dark
At least ten explosions in ten minutes struck energy sites in Chernihiv on Tuesday, cutting power across the northern Ukrainian city in what authorities describe as an ongoing Russian attack. Strategically, renewed pressure on Chernihiv’s grid suggests Moscow is again probing Ukraine’s energy resilience as it did in the winters of 2022–2023. Disabling electricity infrastructure serves several purposes: increasing repair costs, undermining industrial output, and fraying public morale as people cope with recurrent outages. It also sends a message to Western capitals that every delay in air‑defence deliveries leaves more Ukrainian cities exposed.
For Europe’s energy planners and humanitarian agencies, such strikes are a reminder that Ukraine’s ability to keep its grid functioning is now a frontline security issue. The more often repair crews have to rebuild substations under fire, the more donor money and technical support will be needed simply to keep lights and heating on through another winter. In this kind of campaign, success is measured not just in megawatts destroyed, but in hours of darkness imposed on civilians.
The line that matters most going into autumn is simple: Russia does not need to collapse Ukraine’s grid entirely to achieve leverage; it only needs to create enough uncertainty and damage to make every cold spell feel like a countdown. Indicators to watch include the frequency and geographic spread of attacks on energy sites, how quickly Ukrenergo and local utilities can restore power in Chernihiv, and whether additional Western aid packages prioritise transformers and air‑defence munitions in equal measure.
