China’s New Hypersonic Glide Vehicle Puts U.S. Support Aircraft—and Power Projection—at Risk

Beijing has developed hypersonic glide vehicles that can launch air‑to‑air weapons in flight, designed to destroy AWACS, tankers and command aircraft from thousands of miles away. By pushing its threat envelope far beyond contested airspace, China is targeting the support planes that make U.S. air campaigns possible—and forcing Washington and its allies to rethink how they fight.

China is moving to threaten not just U.S. fighters, but the airborne nervous system that lets those fighters operate at scale.

According to new assessments dated 24 August, China has developed hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs) configured to launch air‑to‑air weapons during flight. These systems are described as being designed to target high‑value support aircraft—airborne early warning and control planes, aerial refueling tankers and command platforms—at ranges of thousands of miles. The concept builds on a 2021 test in which a Chinese hypersonic vehicle reportedly flew around the globe before releasing a separate projectile.

If operationalized, such a capability would change the geometry of any conflict involving Chinese and U.S. forces. Instead of having to push fighters and missiles into heavily defended airspace to challenge American airpower, Beijing could employ long‑range, maneuverable vehicles to reach out toward the broader theater, hunting the unarmed but critical aircraft that orbit far from the front lines.

The human and operational stakes are clear. The U.S. model of power projection depends on a relatively small number of large, unstealthy aircraft that guide strikes, extend range and manage the air picture. Crews on AWACS, JSTARS‑type platforms and tankers have long relied on staying outside enemy missile envelopes as their primary protection. A credible Chinese ability to hold them at risk across much of the Western Pacific would force those aircraft to operate farther away, accept higher danger, or be replaced by more distributed and resilient systems.

For pilots and planners, that means more complex refueling plans, shorter time on station near contested zones, and a greater burden on space‑based and unmanned assets to fill gaps in sensing and command. In a crisis over Taiwan or the South China Sea, every added mile of standoff distance could reduce the number of sorties U.S. and allied air forces can generate, and the responsiveness of any air campaign.

Strategically, China’s pursuit of HGV‑launched air‑to‑air weapons reflects a broader focus on “system destruction warfare”—attacking the key nodes that let an adversary fight as a coherent whole. By targeting enablers rather than just shooters, Beijing is signaling that it aims to deny the U.S. its longstanding qualitative edge without matching it platform for platform. For Washington and its allies in Asia, from Japan to Australia, that raises hard questions about basing, survivability and how quickly they can adapt command‑and‑control architectures to a world where their largest aircraft are no longer sanctuary assets.

The development also complicates missile defense and arms control. Hypersonic glide vehicles travel at high speeds and can maneuver unpredictably, stressing current detection and interception systems. When those vehicles can themselves release weapons mid‑flight, defenders must cope with layered, dynamic threats that are harder to track and classify. That blurs lines between strategic and theater systems and makes it more difficult to craft limits that both sides would find verifiable and stabilizing.

A simple way to understand the shift is this: China is moving from contesting the edge of U.S. airpower to reaching for its spine.

Over the coming months, key indicators will include any open‑source evidence of flight testing specifically linked to air‑to‑air payloads, changes in U.S. and allied procurement around distributed sensing and refueling, and doctrinal updates that push more command functions to space or unmanned platforms. How Washington chooses to harden and disperse its high‑value airborne assets will be a quiet but decisive measure of how seriously it takes this emerging threat.
