Ukraine’s New ‘Flamingo’ Missiles Hit Russia’s Soyuz Rocket Hub, Exposing Space and War Link

On the morning of 15 August, multiple Ukrainian sources reported that two FP‑5 "Flamingo" cruise missiles struck the RKC Progress complex in Samara, a major industrial city on the Volga River. RKC Progress is Russia’s only enterprise for serial assembly of Soyuz‑2 launch vehicles, the workhorse rockets that have carried hundreds of satellites and crewed missions into orbit. Imagery and local reports described heavy fire at the facility and suggested severe damage, though casualty figures and the full extent of the destruction were not immediately known.
Preliminary analysis from Ukrainian military-linked observers said the missiles likely hit Building 106A at the site, part of the production complex for Soyuz rockets. That building is described as a high-cleanliness assembly area where onboard electrical systems, instruments and other critical components are integrated into the launch vehicles. If confirmed, a hit there would touch some of the most technically sensitive parts of Russia’s rocket-manufacturing chain. Russian officials acknowledged that a missile strike targeted an aerospace industrial facility in the Samara region and said information on casualties was being clarified, but did not specify which buildings were affected.
The attack appears to be the first publicly reported Ukrainian strike on Russia’s core space-launch industry deep in its interior, hundreds of kilometers from the front. It also showcased a new Ukrainian capability: Fire Point, the developer of the FP‑5 Flamingo, released overnight launch footage that observers linked to the Samara strike. The FP‑5 is presented as a domestically produced cruise missile designed to operate at long ranges, giving Kyiv another option for hitting strategic infrastructure inside Russia even as Western capitals debate limits on the use of their weapons against targets beyond Ukraine’s borders.
For Russia, the immediate concern is operational. RKC Progress has said more than 1,700 launch vehicles and 950 spacecraft of its design have been put into space. Any prolonged disruption there ripples across civilian satellite launches, military space assets, and potentially international commercial customers that still rely on Russian launch services. Even if redundant capacities exist elsewhere, industrial ecosystems built over decades are not easily reconstituted under sanctions and wartime conditions.
For Ukraine, the strike serves multiple purposes. Militarily, it aims to erode Russia’s ability to produce and support systems that can enable reconnaissance, communications and targeting for forces on the ground and at sea. Politically, it signals that Russian cities far from the front are not insulated from the costs of the invasion, and that Ukraine can decide to escalate horizontally into sectors Russia once assumed were off-limits. It also advertises a new generation of indigenous missiles at a moment when Kyiv faces uncertainty over the depth and duration of Western weapons supplies.
This is part of a wider pattern. Ukrainian drones were also reported on 15 August to have struck the Savasleyka airfield in Nizhny Novgorod region, a base hosting MiG‑31K aircraft capable of carrying Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. Russian accounts described air defenses engaging the attack and said aircraft were being evacuated as fires burned near the airfield. Alongside massed drone raids that Russia’s Defense Ministry said involved hundreds of Ukrainian UAVs overnight, the Flamingo strike fits a clear strategy: stretch Russian air defenses, complicate logistics, and hit high-value infrastructure that underpins both today’s fighting and tomorrow’s force generation.
The shareable insight is stark: in this phase of the war, even a rocket that normally points straight up can become a target for a missile flying low and in from the front.
Attention now turns to whether Russia can quickly restore operations at RKC Progress, how openly it acknowledges any degradation in its launch schedule, and whether Ukraine will continue to prioritize strategic industrial nodes over more tactical military targets. Western governments and space-industry players will also be watching for any impact on cooperative or commercial programs tied to Soyuz‑class vehicles—and for signs that strikes on deep infrastructure are becoming a normalized, rather than exceptional, feature of this war.
