Ukraine’s latest campaign to weaken Russian control over occupied Crimea is no longer focused only on ships and depots. It is going after the power grid that keeps Moscow’s radars and missile batteries running.

Between 1 July and 13 August, Ukrainian forces "resultatively worked over" 240 Russian energy nodes in an operation dubbed "Crimean switch off," according to a Ukrainian commander involved in the effort. He said the strikes had knocked out stationary radars and other elements of Russian air defenses, disrupting Moscow’s ability to monitor the skies and, in his words, opening a path for Ukraine’s "freedom-loving bird"—a reference to Ukrainian aircraft and long-range drones. The scale of the claim cannot be independently verified, but it fits with a visible pattern of repeated blasts, power cuts, and air defense activations across the peninsula this summer.

The operation, as described by Ukrainian military leadership, focuses on substations, feeder lines, and energy junctions that supply electricity to radar sites, command posts, and anti-aircraft batteries. Those gaps would create opportunities for Ukrainian strike aircraft, cruise missiles, and long-range drones to approach high-value targets in Crimea with a higher chance of slipping through. It would also force Russian commanders to spread limited mobile air defense assets across more sites, possibly thinning coverage over critical ports like Sevastopol or logistics corridors connecting Crimea to mainland Russia.

The pressure on Russian air defenses in Crimea fits a broader Ukrainian effort to turn the peninsula from a sanctuary into a liability for Moscow. Over the past year, attacks have repeatedly targeted Sevastopol’s naval facilities, fuel depots, and the Kerch bridge. Going after the power that keeps the peninsula’s military installations functioning extends that logic, adding another vector of vulnerability to a region Russia portrays as fully integrated and secure.

For outside observers, the campaign offers a stark reminder: when war targets power, the front line runs through civilian grids as much as through trenches. Ukraine is betting that degrading Russian military capacity in Crimea is worth the risk of collateral outages and the political cost of hitting infrastructure that Moscow insists is now part of its homeland.

Signals to watch in the coming weeks include any extended or widespread blackouts reported across Crimea, changes in the tempo and effectiveness of Russian air defenses against Ukrainian missiles and drones in the Black Sea region, and Russian attempts to rapidly reinforce or reconfigure power supplies to key military sites. Clear evidence that Russian radar coverage has been significantly reduced, or that Ukrainian strikes are penetrating deeper into defended airspace, would show how far "Crimean switch off" has shifted the balance.
