The discovery and destruction of two Russian‑made drones drifting close to a major offshore gas development in the Black Sea is turning a quiet corner of NATO’s southeastern flank into a frontline risk map for Europe’s energy security.

Romanian authorities said on 11 August that explosive ordnance disposal divers destroyed two Gerbera unmanned aerial vehicles found in the Black Sea, around 90 nautical miles from the port city of Constanța and near the Neptun Deep gas project. The UAVs were first spotted by a vessel operating in the area and were later neutralized through controlled detonations. Officials stressed that the drones did not belong to Ukrainian forces, but did not identify who launched them or from where.

For crews working on or near Neptun Deep and other offshore facilities, the incident cuts through the illusion that the war in Ukraine is a landlocked conflict. Service ships and platforms that were once concerned mainly with storms and industrial accidents must now factor in the chance encounter with drifting military hardware that may or may not still be armed.
