Ukraine’s Deep-Strike Drone War Hits 43% of Russia’s Refining Capacity

Ukrainian forces say they have disabled a record 43% of Russia’s oil refining capacity this year, striking nearly 700 targets deep inside Russian territory with long-range drones. New attacks on the TANECO refinery in Tatarstan and fuel depots in occupied Crimea show how energy infrastructure has become a battlefield, with implications for Russia’s war effort, civilian fuel supplies, and global markets.

Russia’s oil industry, long a pillar of its war economy, is absorbing sustained damage from a Ukrainian drone campaign that has moved far beyond symbolic pinpricks.

Ukraine’s military says that in the first half of 2026, its Deep Strike program has hit 697 targets inside Russia, disabling a record 43% of the country’s oil refining capacity. A Ukrainian specialized drone unit described the increase in strikes as the result of “systematic and planned capability buildup,” saying operations against targets in the enemy’s rear have surged by 1,150% since the start of the year.

That statistical claim is hard to independently verify in full, but individual strikes are increasingly visible. In the early hours of 10 August, regional authorities in Russia’s Tatarstan confirmed that the TANECO refinery complex in Nizhnekamsk came under drone attack, reporting industrial damage and casualties. TANECO, with a design capacity of roughly 15 million tonnes per year, is one of Russia’s largest refineries and a key node in its petrochemical industry.

Separately, satellite imagery reviewed after an August 7 Ukrainian strike on the Hvardiiske airfield and oil facility in occupied Crimea shows a fuel depot destroyed and several structures burned. Analysts say at least two aircraft hangars used to store and prepare Geran and Gerbera attack drones were hit, along with six impact points on the airfield’s runway. Another set of images from July 30 reveals fire damage inside the tank farm at the Tamanneftegaz oil terminal in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, a strategic energy hub near the Black Sea.

Ukrainian sources also point to a largely destroyed oil depot at Hvardiiske in Crimea, with only a handful of tanks visibly intact and likely empty. Russian officials generally acknowledge drone activity but often claim most incoming systems are shot down and downplay the extent of damage. The pattern is clear either way: fuel depots, refineries, and drone support infrastructure deep in Russian and occupied territory are now routine targets, not rare exceptions.

For Russian civilians, the campaign’s impact is felt less in front-line headlines than at gas stations and industrial plants. Repeated hits on refineries and storage sites threaten to disrupt regional fuel supplies, raise transport costs, and complicate agricultural and industrial logistics, especially in more remote regions dependent on particular plants. For workers in these facilities, recurring air-raid alerts and the risk of secondary explosions turn once-stable jobs into high-risk postings.

Operationally, every destroyed fuel depot or damaged refinery complicates Russia’s ability to sustain high-tempo missile and drone strikes on Ukraine. Fuel is not just about civilian mobility; it powers logistics convoys, tactical aviation, and generator-backed air-defense systems across occupied territory. Strikes on Hvardiiske that damage both drone infrastructure and fuel storage send a pointed message: the same nodes that enable Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian cities are themselves vulnerable, even hundreds of kilometers from the front.

Internationally, the numbers Ukraine cites — 43% of refining capacity out of action at some point this year — raise uncomfortable questions for energy markets. Russia remains a major exporter of oil products, and while it has shown an ability to reroute flows and patch damaged infrastructure, repeated disruptions introduce uncertainty into global supply calculations. Even if markets absorb short-term shocks, insurers, traders, and neighboring states must now factor in the risk that critical facilities can be hit without warning, far from traditional battle lines.

The deeper shift is that strategic energy infrastructure inside a nuclear-armed state is now an active, contested battlespace. Pipelines, refineries, depots, and airfields that once sat comfortably in the “rear” are being treated by Ukraine as legitimate military enablers of Russia’s offensive campaign.

The next signals to watch are whether Russian fuel exports show sustained volume or routing changes, whether Moscow reallocates scarce air defenses away from the front to protect industrial hubs, and whether Ukraine begins targeting an even broader set of logistics nodes — such as rail chokepoints and power plants feeding key refineries — to intensify pressure on Russia’s war machine.
