Fresh warnings about potential shortages of high-purity aluminum — the kind used in fighter jets, armored vehicles and other front-line systems — point to a U.S. defense industrial base that may struggle to keep pace with the demands of a large-scale conflict.

High-purity aluminum is not the metal in soda cans; it is a specialty product required for critical aerospace and defense applications, where strength, weight and performance under stress can mean the difference between mission success and catastrophic failure. Recent reporting from business and defense circles has sounded the alarm that U.S. supplies of this metal are tight enough that a major war could quickly expose hard limits on production and stockpiles.
