Ukraine Knocks Out Russian Starlink-Jammer, Exposing Weak Spot in Moscow’s Fight Against Battlefield Connectivity

In a war defined as much by data as by territory, Ukraine has scored another hit on Russia’s ability to shut down its communications. Satellite imagery dated 7 August indicates Ukrainian forces destroyed a Russian Volna Kupol Garant electronic warfare system near Gelendzhik on Russia’s Black Sea coast, the latest blow to Moscow’s efforts to jam the Starlink satellite network that underpins much of Kyiv’s battlefield connectivity.
The system, located at a Russian military unit known as 2156, was shown damaged or destroyed in new imagery reviewed by open-source analysts. Ukrainian sources described it as a Volna Kupol Garant complex, designed to create powerful Ku-band uplink interference that disrupts Starlink terminals over a localized area of roughly 20 square kilometers. Monitoring groups say this is the third documented loss of this type of jammer, which is large, expensive and relatively scarce.
The strike was part of a wider Ukrainian drone attack toward targets near Gelendzhik. Footage circulating from the operation shows a Ukrainian strike drone pushing toward what observers describe as “shadow fleet”–linked assets in the area, while a Russian Pantsir-S1 air-defense system fires three missiles in an unsuccessful attempt to shoot it down. In a separate clip from the front, Russian troops are seen firing rifles at an incoming Ukrainian kamikaze drone and ultimately managing to bring it down, underscoring how often low-tech improvisation is now forced to fill the gaps in high-tech defenses.
For Ukrainian units along the front, the destruction of systems like Volna Kupol Garant is more than a technical victory. Starlink has become a lifeline for coordinating artillery, drones and logistics, especially after Russia spent months targeting conventional cellular and power infrastructure. Every jammer removed from the battlefield is one less zone where commanders might suddenly lose the digital picture, missiles might fly blind, or evacuation routes go dark.
For Russian planners, the loss exposes a hard trade-off. To effectively jam a moving satellite constellation like Starlink, emitters must be powerful and sustained. Those same characteristics make them visible targets: their large physical footprint and strong emissions are easy for Ukrainian intelligence and Western partners to detect, locate and ultimately strike. In effect, each Volna Kupol Garant turned on becomes a beacon broadcasting its own position.
The battle over Starlink also carries wider implications for how future wars will be fought. Russia’s attempts to adapt Soviet-era electronic warfare doctrine to a world of proliferated commercial satellites have so far yielded mixed results; Ukraine’s use of inexpensive, resilient connectivity has allowed small units and drones to punch far above their weight. Other militaries are watching closely, taking notes on which jamming concepts survive contact with a live, contested network and which simply paint a bullseye on the emitter.
For civilians, especially in heavily shelled regions of Ukraine, connectivity is about more than targeting. It enables evacuations, remote schooling, medical coordination and evidence-gathering on war crimes. When Russia succeeds in blinding a pocket of territory, the effect is immediate: people cannot call for help, document attacks or check whether a route is safe. When such jammers are destroyed, those communities move one notch further away from total isolation.
The shareable lesson is blunt: in modern war, the side that keeps talking usually keeps moving — and often keeps winning.
Next, observers will be looking for signs that Russia disperses or redesigns its Starlink-jamming assets, whether new types of emitters appear in satellite imagery, and how often Ukrainian drones continue to penetrate dense air-defense zones like Gelendzhik. A pattern of repeated strikes on high-value EW systems, combined with footage of Russian air defenses missing low-flying drones, would suggest that Moscow’s struggle to control the electromagnetic spectrum is becoming a critical vulnerability, not a trump card.
